01.07.06 Terenure retain Lorcan Sherlock cup

The Annual Golf Competition for Leinster Senior Clubs took place on Thursday 15th June 2006 at the Grange Golf Club.
Thirteen Clubs with 8 Players each took part in this Foursomes Competition with three score cards to count and was played in wonderful weather conditions.

Terenure RFC were worthy winners this year with a magnificent score of 197 ½ and in doing so defended the Cup they won last year. Runners up were Blackrock College RFC followed by Wanderers FC in third place. Our appreciation and thanks to the Grange Golf Club for the condition of the course and their fine facilities.

This competition was first played in 1934 when the winners were Bective Rangers FC and is an important date in the Club Rugby diary. The Cup is named after and was donated by Lorcan Sherlock former High Sheriff of Dublin whom we understand from learned scribes hailed from Clontarf.

Old Belvedere jinxed Terenure again defeating them 18 -08 in the Leinster Senior Cup in Lakelands on Saturday.

31.09.06 J1's defeated by Wanderers
Result 18-7 to Wanderers
Scorer K Molloy 1 Try R Devlin 1 Conversion

The J1's did not perform in this encounter and let an efficient Wanderers team outscore us on a 2 to 1 try basis over the 80 minutes. While we did some things well it was clear that we have some work to do together to function as a team when the pressure comes on. We turned over a lot of ball and on occasion frustration set in and we conceded penalties at the breakdown which gave away hard won territory. Not one to remember but one to use as a yardstick of what we need to do to improve. Simplicity and workrate on basics is sometimes better when things are not going your way but we did not adapt to this on this occasion. Roll on St Mary’s this weekend as I am sure a lot of players will have something to say in this match based on the performance against Wanderers.

11.10.06 J1 Report
J1's drew 3-3 with St Mary's at the weekend. In a match where we were lucky to draw we would have been unlucky to lose. A draw was a fair result. The match was played with a high intensity and great team work and we created chances to score as did St Mary's but excellent defence by both sides left the scoring at one penalty a piece.

Terenure U13 B'S lost 36-26 to Coolmine on Sunday in their first League match After a poor start in which the much bigger Coolmine pack scored 3 quick tries, Terenure eventually setteled into the game moving the ball quickly & producing some great running rugby to score a couple of tries of their own

16.10.2006 Terenure struggle in Limerick
UL Bohemian 43 - 08 Terenure College
UL Bohemian provided Terenure with a valuable lesson on their return to the top flight. This season is not going to be easy. Bohs secured the full points and a bonus point defeating Terenure by 35 points in total - Terenure's fourth loss to the Limerick side. Next up Dungannon on Saturday.

16.10.2006 Junior 1 Report
J1s lost 40-3 against Clontarf away on Sunday. While we played some good rugby at stages it was not consistent. Some missed tackles which led to soft tries didn't aid the cause and we were playing catchup all day. We had lost some players from the selected team in advance of the match and also on the morning of the game which made it difficult for all concerned and may have been a factor in this performance.

TERENURE 23 (J Bollard try; G Crawford try, dr gl; R McCarthy try pen, con) DUNGANNON 12 (R McCarter 3 pens, 1 drop goal)

23.10.06 J1's suffer in Greystones
J1s lost 55-19 against Greystones at home on Sunday. In scoring our three tries we showed we can play good rugby but defence and commitment to the breakdown was poor for the most of the day and this let a very good running side get soft tries throughout. Need to drastically improve.

Next Match v Bective Rangers Home Sunday 29th October 3pm.

23.10.05 50 not out (hopefully)
Leinster and Terenure College fullback Girvan Dempsey was due to be presented with an ERC elite award - it's a cap - for making his 50th appearance for Leinster in Europe against Gloucester on Saturday but it transpired prior to the match that there had been an error. He was credited with playing against Llanelli at Stradey Park in the 1998-99 season and although down on the official teamsheet withdrew from the game prior to kick-off because of injury. He was replaced by Gordon D'Arcy. Hopefully this weekend Girv.

31.10.06 J1's Win
J1s won 37-23 against Bective Rangers at home on Sunday. A vast improvement on previous two weeks. Players heads were in the right place and the effort from all was exceptional to produce a very good performance and scoring some super tries. Work ethic, support and commitment were keys to this success. A lot done - a lot more to do. Roll on next weekend. Next Match v DLSP Away Sunday 5th November 2.30pm.

06.11.06 J1's Record another victory
J1s won 32-12 against DLSP away on Sunday. A curious match whereby we never looked under pressure but never also got going. Scrums are an area to work on this week after a difficult afternoon. Good effort by all concerned but maybe concentration at times drifted. Two wins on the trot, can we make it three on Friday night?

J1s won 22-17 against Suttonians at home on Saturday. Terenure started very well and were rewarded early on with a well worked try down the blind side. A second try followed soon after. The defence had a lapse to let the Suttonians wing run nearly the length of the pitch to score a try against the run of play. Terenure knuckled down again and just before half time scored the third try. The second half against the wind was very difficult for all concerned but the workrate of everyone was excellent to hold Suttonians to 12 points to 7 in the second half to secure the victory. A very good performace and again the bar has been set as to the level we can play.

13.11.06 Weekend Results
Junior 1:
Old Belvedere 20 - 08 Terenure College
Junior 2:
Terenure College 12 - 21 Old Belvedere

J1s lost 8-20 against Old Belvedere away under lights on Friday. Terenure started well and were rewarded with an early penalty which was converted to give us the lead. We then let in a well worked try to Belvedere followed by a penalty and were trailing 3-8 going into 1st half injury time. A well placed kick allowed Belvo score again at this vital stage to put a 3-15 scorleine at half time which was not fair on the play by both sides. The second half, like the first was very level with Belvo probably making slightly more ground with the ball in hand. Both teams scored excellently worked tries in this half to leave the score at 8-20 going into the last 10 minutes. A lot of pressure from Terenure was in vain as Belvo held out to win. A good performace based on the injury list on the night and disruption to the pack.

06.11.06 'Rock beat 1sts
Ireland Under-21 international Fionn Carr ran the show for Blackrock College as he scored 16 points in their electric 31-19 win overTerenure . ‘Rock moved up to sixth place thanks to Carr’s man-of-the-match performance at Stradbrook. Despite leaking an early try to ‘Nure scrum half Derek Hegarty, the hosts led 17-7 at the break with both Carr and winger David Rowan touching down. A brilliant break by Carr set up winger Andy O'Neill for a third quarter try and Leinster’s Des Dillon, who acquitted himself well in the second row, grabbed ‘Rock’s bonus point score. ‘Nure completed the scoring with a Graham Crawford try and a penalty try.

27.11.06 A Big Weekend ahead.
it is a big weekend for Terenure College. The AIB League rolls back into town after a three week absence. UCD make the short trip from Belfield to take on Terenure College. The Belfield side sit second from bottom and suffered a first defeat in 10 years in the colours game to a strong Trinity side. Nothing will be held back in Lakelands on Saturday. UCD , coahced by former Terenure College man Bobby Byrne and former SCT coach John McClean will be out for revenge. The same goes for Terenure recently beaten by old rivals Blackrock College, they will have everything to prove. BE THERE - SATURDAY 1430 LAKELANDS PARK.

Elsewhere it is a big weekend for the J1 side who also take on UCD. UCD like Terenure have had an up and down season. Winners against DLSP on Saturday UCD seem to be on a bit of a roll and sit two places behind mid table Terenure. Terenure have improved of late winning three from their last four outings. Dave Lynaghs side will be all out to put one over the 'Collidge' side.

The other fixtures include some juicy encounters with the J4 sides both up against tough opposition. Both sides will be looking to get to the topof their respective tables.

27.11.06 Dempsey OK after big collision
Ternure's Girvan Dempsey failed to emerge from the Ireland dressing room for the second half against the Pacific Islanders yesterday after being knocked unconscious during the latter half of the first period. Whilst the 69 times capped full back finished the first half he was retired at half time. Happily he took to the field with the team after the game suffering no ill effects from his meeting with the Islander.

27.11.06 A good weekend for Terenure
It was a 100% record weekend for Terenure College as all teams in competition won their games. The Junior 2 side currently sit in fourth plac2 in the table after a 10 point victory over Old Wesley on Saturday. Terenure College 1 sit second in their table after a 41 point victory over Old Wesley and Terenure College 2 sit joint top with Bective Rangers after a narrow 9 point victory over Newbridge also on Saturday. The U13's dispatched Barnhall in their league fixture on Sunday completing the unbeaten record.

07.12.06 New Scrum Laws
The IRB Council has approved a change to the Law that governs the scrum. This follows a review of the scrum by the IRB Rugby Committee and its Law Project Group following recommendations made by the IRB’s Medical Committee. The Law change will see the implementation of a four stage “crouch, touch, pause, engage” sequence for the initial scrum engagement at all levels of the Game from 1 January, 2007.

04.12.06 Terenure narrowly lose out

Fergus McFadden grabbed a personal haul of 18 points as UCD finally secured their first win of the league campaign - a 28-22 defeat of Terenure College. McFadden, the Ireland Under-21 centre, scored a try, two conversions and three penalties to help College break their duck. Terenure, thanks to tries from hooker Kevin Mahony and out-half Shane Cullen, led 12-11 at the interval. Two McFadden penalties pushed UCD back in front before the sides swapped four tries in the closing half-hour. Flanker Conor Connolly and hooker James Blaney crossed for ‘Nure, while the visitors counted on a controversial penalty try, which saw Terenure dropping a maul close to their line, and McFadden’s effort.

Meanwhile the J1s won 29-11 against UCD away on Sunday. Terenure played very well in terrible conditions and were rewarded for their patience by scoring 4 tries in the first half and one in the second. Not a day for running rugby with the strong wind and driving rain but both sides made few errors considering the conditions. Terenure had the upper hand in the forwards and used their heads to drive at the UCD pack close in for all the scores in the first half. In the second half the defence was very good but we did manage a large penalty count against us which put us back in defence mode on more than one occasion. A very well worked try off the base of a scrum was the reward for the second half display which was played mainly in the Terenure half due to the conditions. A very good team performance and a 100% record in lineouts (1 from our total of 1 lineout on our throw in the match – must be a record). Next week sees Old Wesley who are ahead of us in the table but on yesterdays performance should hold no fear for this team.

10.12.06 J1's on a roll
J1s won 13-8 against Old Wesley at home on Sunday. Terenure played very well in the first half in soft conditions to turn around 10-0 up due to two well worked tries. The interpassing around the contact area caused the Wesley defence problems and we were unlucky not to score at least another try. Playing with the wind in the second half we were not as accurate as in the first and played a good bit without the ball. However stout defence and good covering made for a solid win in the end even though the last few minutes we were under pressure from a very good Wesley pack.

Next Match v Carlow Away Sunday 17th December 2.00pm (please note kick-off time).

09.12.06 Terenure left cursing luck
Terenure College were left cursing their luck as they slipped to a 27-13 defeat to Shannon, allowing the defending champions in for three late tries. Playing with the wind in the first half, 'Nure broke into a 13-3 lead with experienced hooker James Blaney, playing against his old team-mates, crashing through for his second try in as many games. The home side still held a 13-6 lead by the 76th-minute, but Shannon almost effortlessly took control. Mossie Lawlor rampaged up the left wing, ducking out of three tackles to touch down, and in injury-time, Limerick Gaelic footballer Stephen Kelly bagged two impressive scores. Kelly raced onto a chip through from replacement Andrew Thompson for his first, and the winger won the race to his own kick ahead for his third try of the league campaign.

08.01.07 J1's defeat Barnhall.

J1s won 12-9 against Barnhall away on Sunday. Overall a good match based on conditions and a good work out after the Christmas excesses. Terenure started well but we kept on turning over the ball when we had worked ourselves into good positions on the field. Terenure started to offload a bit more in the tackle and this got us into the opposition territory but maybe we took it a ruck or maul too far and could not make use of the slow ball. A bit of pressure on Barnhall allowed us to block a kick which we scored the first try which was excellently converted from the touchline. The second half started the same as the first with most play happening in the middle of the park. The highlight was a good rolling maul in the second half secured our second try and the much needed win. Next up is Lansdowne which is a huge match for us. Hopefully all the eligible 1st XV squad players will assist us in this one as they should every week.
Next Match v Lansdowne Home Sunday 14th January 2.30pm.

08.01.07 Terenure secure valuable points
Terenure secured some valuable points against Buccaneers on Saturday with a hard fought 18 - 8 win over the Athlone side. Tries from Darragh O'Doherty and and Shane Cullen secured the victory with Rob McCarthy adding two penalties and a conversion. Terenure's victory was helped by two Buccaneers yellow cards but the crowd were incensed when a second yellow card was not handed to Buccaneers full back after a knee first lunge into Shane Cullen after his try.

Terenure played extremely well and looked more like the side that won Division 2 last year. Their first try came from a superb rolling maul well directed by Mark Mahony, the second from a superb Cullen break. Buccaneers fought back with a try but it was too little too late. Terenure sit fourth from bottom away from the danger zone.

‘Nure, facing the headquarters side in the league for the first time in four seasons, took the spoils thanks to prop Stephen Nolan’s second half try.

07.12.06 Abuse of match officials

Dear All,
Please find below a copy of the Code of Conduct relating to the abuse of Match Officials. Unfortunately there is an increasing trend towards the abuse of officials by players, team management and supporters. If a Club is found guilty of such abuse the penalties are very severe from loss of International Tickets, to suspensions, loss of league points, fines etc. Due to this increasing trend the Management Committee of the Branch, with the support of the ARLB, have introduced a Code of Conduct. EVERY Club is expected to adhere to the code. We would ask that you put the code in a prominent place in your club, that you circulate it to all you members and you bring it to the attention of everyone involved on and off the pitch in your Club.

You are responsible for the actions of your members and management. Please be pro-active in stamping out the trend of abuse of officials. If it continues we will not keep our referees, we will have difficulty in recruiting new referees and the entire game will suffer.

Yours sincerely,
Dorothy Collins.

19.02.2007 Terenure not Dolphin friendly
Alex Dunlop plunged over for a crucial try as Terenure College denied Dolphin at Lakelands Park. Terenure rise to 8th in the table 9 points off a play off spot.

The Dubliners kept up their record of never having lost to Dolphin at home in the league – that is five wins and one draw now – as Leinster ‘A’ lock Dunlop struck in the closing stages.

The visitors burst into life and with tries from back line flyers Eric Moloney and Ed Mills – they led 13-12 at half-time.

However the Cork side could only add a Barry Keeshan penalty on the resumption as Robbie McCarthy kicked a penalty and converted Dunlop’s match-winning try.

19.02.2007 Rock knock Nure
J1s lost 30-40 against Blackrock away on Sunday. A couple of soft tries being the difference between the two sides in the end. This dead rubber however was entertaining and it was a good run out in preparation for the Metro Cup which starts this Thursday night. Terenure played very well in the first half and scored three good tries. However some slack defence gave away the advantage on a couple of occasions to keep Blackrock in touch at half time. In the second half Blackrock upped the tempo and were rewarded with 4 tries of there own to open up a gap. Terenure came back and scored a penalty and a converted try but that was that. All 20 players had a good run and mission accomplished as in we have finished our matches in the J1 League. Roll on the cup.

Next Match v Old Wesley Away Thursday 22nd February 7.30pm please note kick-off time and day).

14.02.2007 11th v 10th on Saturday
Terenure will be looking to leap frog Dolphin on Saturday as last years two promotion winners take on each other in Lakelands Park. Terenure have had a good run recently and they will be looking to put their AIB Cup defeat to Clonakility aside when they take on their Division 2 final opponents Dolphin. Of course the final never took place but a win on Saturday should secure Division 1 rugby for another season in Lakelands. Come along and support the team in this crunch encounter.

Terenure College 22 - Clonakilty 31
Scorers: Terenure: Tries: David Cazabon, John Bollard, Mark Mahony, Kevin Mahony; Con: Cazabon

Clonakilty are taking on the top flight all by themselves after knocking Terenure College out of the AIB Cup at Lakelands. Clon are the only Division Two side left in the draw for next month's cup semi-finals, with heavyweights Garryowen, Shannon or Harlequins to provide their opposition, after their fifth league or cup win on the trot. In the sides’ first ever clash, the Cork side raced into a 26-10 half-time lead – Derek Dillon, Dan Spencer, Eoin Murphy and Colin Murphy all grabbed tries. Hooker Alfie Harte kicked three first half conversions. Clon centre Paul Dillon scooted in for a 44th-minute try to put the result in little doubt, although cousins Mark and Kevin Mahony did hit back for ‘Nure. Terenure: D Cazabon; A Hughes, J Bollard, K Coleman, B Flanagan; M Gillespie (M O'Neil), M Mahony; M Hamilton (N McCarron), K Mahony, B Gill (S Nolan), A Moss, K O'Dwyer, B Malony, A Dunlop. 23.04.07
Greystones win through in Vice Presidents Cup
Terenure were defeated by four points in the final of the Vice Presidents Cup in Templeville Road on Saturday. After a poor first half Nure led 3-0 at half time and no-one could have been prepared for the second half which saw each team score three tries a piece with some superb play, including an interception inside his own half by the Ggreystones wing. The lead changed half a dozen times and both teams fought back well when down.

No-one could have expected such a high-scoring high quality 2nd half nor could anyone have predicted the outcome! Nure were very unfortunate to be leading 24-21 with a few minutes left having saved a certain try minutes earlier when 'Stones were over the line but superb defence prevented them from touching down - only to concede a try after a fantastic break by the Stones out half led to their centre scoring under the posts!

Hard luck to the Terenure side after putting up a great fight in only their thrid defeat of the whole season.
